Make a natural soap at home (DIY)

Making soap at home can be a fun and rewarding experience. Here is a basic recipe and steps for making soap at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of coconut oil

  • 2 cups of olive oil
  • 2 cups of distilled water
  • 1 cup of lye (sodium hydroxide)

Tools:

  • Stainless steel pot
  • Thermometer
  • Plastic or silicone mold
  • Safety goggles
  • Rubber gloves
  • Long-sleeved shirt
  • Wooden spoon

Steps:

  1. Put on your safety gear: goggles, gloves, and a long-sleeved shirt to protect yourself from the lye.
  2. In a stainless steel pot, heat the coconut oil and olive oil on low heat until they are melted.
  3. In another container, carefully mix the lye and distilled water. It will get hot and release fumes, so be sure to do this in a well-ventilated area.
  4. Let the lye mixture cool to room temperature, then add it to the pot of melted oils. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until it thickens and reaches trace, which is when the mixture leaves a visible trail when you lift the spoon.
  5. Pour the mixture into a plastic or silicone mold, tap it on a flat surface to remove air bubbles, and cover it with a towel or plastic wrap.
  6. Let the soap cure for 4-6 weeks in a cool, dry place. During this time, the soap will harden and the lye will neutralize, making it safe to use.
  7. After the curing period, remove the soap from the mold and cut it into bars.
  8. That's it! This recipe makes a basic, unscented soap, but you can experiment with adding scents, colors, and other ingredients to customize your soap. However, be sure to research the properties and safe usage of any ingredients you plan to add to your soap.
